In the coming months, I hope to see a spirited contest between all the candidates in the Senate race, not just a handing-off of the senatorial washroom keys and a change of the signage in Washington.

With all the attention Richard Blumenthal has been getting in his new position as Christopher Dodd's heir-apparent, might I suggest that Connecticut voters look beyond this past week's events and take a look at Merrick Alpert?

Unlike Dodd or his dauphin, Alpert has real-world experience, from serving our country in Bosnia (earning the Joint Service Commendation Medal) to starting and running small businesses.

With the many security threats our country faces, and the economic crisis our current senator was involved in creating, I want Connecticut's next senator to be fresh, from outside the broken system and to have the kind of knowledge and experience that Alpert brings to the table.

On The Road With Merrick

Tonight at a town hall meeting, a man asked, "If the same people remain in Congress, will things ever change?" And I answered, no: "If career politicians are the only people who are in Congress, nothing will ever change - because they will continue to pass legislation in exchange for campaign contributions from special interest groups." This is the essence of status-quo politics. And the only way to change the outcome is to change the representatives.
